Die Kupplung ist die trennbare Verbindung zwischen Motor und Getriebe. Sie hat die Aufgabe den Drehmoment des Motors an das Getriebe zu übertragen. Dabei muss sie gewährleisten, dass beim Anfahren die Drehzahl durch Gleitreibung, was man auch Schlupf nennt, bei laufendem Motor und stehendem Getriebe so angepasst wird, dass kein Rucken entsteht. Der Kupplungsscheiben Aufbau
In der Regel wird bei nahezu allen PKW eine Einscheiben-Trockenkupplung verbaut. Diese besteht aus Schwungrad, Druckplatte und der dazwischen liegenden Mitnehmerscheibe. Die Mitnehmerscheibe hat ihren Namen daher, dass sie bei gelöstem Kupplungspedal von dem Druck der zusammengeführten äußeren Komponenten "mitgenommen" wird, und sich dreht. Die Kupplungsscheibe wird durch die Tellerfeder im Kupplungsautomaten über die Druckplatte an die Schwungscheibe gepresst.
