Hört man bei Betätigen des Kupplungspedals außergewöhnliche Geräusche, könnte das daran liegen, dass eine Fehlfunktion der Druckplatte oder des Getriebes vorliegt. Um das Problem genauer zu analysieren, sollte man das Kupplungspedal betätigen und darauf achten, ob dabei ein Geräusch entsteht. Ist kein Geräusch mehr zu hören, liegt wahrscheinlich ein Defekt im Getriebe vor. Wird das Geräusch stärker, ist in der Regel das Kupplungsdrucklager dafür verantwortlich. Die Funktionsweise
Die Kupplung ist zwischen Motor und Getriebe angeordnet. Sie ist mit dem Schwungrad verschraubt und rotiert mit der gleichen Drehzahl. Sie besteht in der Regel aus drei Scheiben. Dem Schwungrad, der Kupplungsdruckplatte und der dazwischen liegenden Reibscheibe, die man auch als Mitnehmerscheibe bezeichnet. Sowohl das Schwungrad als auch die Druckplatte sind an der Kurbelwelle befestigt und drehen sich mit gleicher Geschwindigkeit. Sie umgreifen sozusagen die innen liegende Reibscheibe. Der Abstand zwischen den beiden äußeren Scheiben verändert sich durch Betätigen des Kupplungspedals. Lässt der Fahrer des Autos das Kupplungspedal "kommen" verringert sich der Abstand der beiden Scheiben zueinander. Je mehr das Kupplungspedal losgelassen wird, desto größer wird der Druck auf die Reibungsplatte. Sie beginnt sich langsam mit zu drehen, wird also von den rotierenden äußeren Scheiben "mitgenommen". Da die Reibungsscheibe an der Eingangswelle zum Getriebe befestigt ist, fährt das Auto bei rotierender Scheibe los.

Ist die Kupplungsdruckplatte Funktion nicht mehr gewährleistet, empfiehlt es sich umgehend, eine Werkstatt aufzusuchen. Für einen Wechsel muss in aller Regel das Getriebe ausgebaut werden. Bei einigen Fahrzeugmodellen muss zusätzlich der Motor ausgebaut werden.
